# Award interpretation

> How award details and pay rate levels affect worker selection and shift costs during rostering

When you assign a worker to a shift, Visualcare uses the worker's award details and pay rate level to calculate the correct pay rate. Understanding how this works helps you make informed rostering decisions.

## How pay rates are determined during rostering

When a worker is assigned to a shift, the system looks at three factors:

1. The worker's **award** (set in their profile under **Engagement Details**)
2. The worker's **pay rate level** (set under the **Finance** tab)
3. The **service code** on the shift

These three factors determine the pay rate that automatically pulls through to the roster.

If a worker earns a different rate for certain services, this is handled through **pay rate overrides** on the worker profile. For example, a worker on pay rate level one might jump to level two for specific services. When rostered for that service, the override applies automatically.
