# SAH split shift rostering

> Set up split shifts and auto split shifts for Support at Home clients in Visualcare

A split shift lets you break a single rostered shift into multiple segments, each with its own service type and duration. This is useful for SAH clients whose shifts span more than one service category - for example, a shift that includes both Everyday Living and Independence services.

In timesheets, each split appears as an individual line item. On Vworker, the shift displays as a single shift for the worker.

## Creating a split shift

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create the shift">
    Open the roster and create a shift as you normally would. See [Creating new shifts](/scheduling/creating-new-shifts) for the standard steps.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select Split Shift">
    In the service list for the shift, scroll to the bottom and select **Split Shift**. This option always appears at the end of the service list.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Handle overnight shifts">
    If the shift runs overnight (for example, from Friday evening into Saturday), tick **Occurs over 2 days** and select the following date. This ensures the correct day and rates are applied to each part of the shift.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Configure each split">
    Tick **Split 1** to activate the first segment. Tick additional splits as needed. For each split, select the service and enter the duration.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set a repeat pattern (optional)">
    If this is a recurring shift, select the repeat frequency under **Shift Repeats**. See [Creating recurring shifts](/scheduling/creating-recurring-shifts) for more on repeat options.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>Split shifts with no gap between segments do not trigger a broken shift allowance. If there is a genuine break between segments, use the standard break method in the roster rather than creating a split shift.</Note>

## Auto split shifts

The auto split setting automatically splits shifts where pay rates change mid-shift - for example, when an overnight shift crosses midnight from Friday into Saturday.

To enable auto split, go to **Settings** → **Settings** → **Rostering** tab and tick **Auto Split**.

When auto split is on, Visualcare identifies rate-change boundaries within a shift and splits it automatically at those points. This removes the need to manually configure splits for overnight or boundary-crossing shifts.
